ATLANTA (WTVM) – One of Georgia's largest healthcare systems is issuing an identity theft alert.
Emory Healthcare says it has alerted thousands of patients about a fraud scheme in which Social Security numbers were stolen.
Hospital officials say someone stole personal patient information, using 77 Social Security numbers in a tax return scam.
Officials say 2,400 other patients were given year-long identity protection in case they are targeted in the future.
The fraud was discovered by the Internal Revenue Service.
