COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  The list for the 2010 Georgia Schools of Excellence was recently released and one school in Muscogee County made the grade.

The number of banners and awards outside Britt David Magnet Academy speak for themselves. Now the school needs to make room for just one more honor.

"There are 2,487 schools in the state of Georgia and what that means is Britt David Academy is in the top ten percent of those schools. There are districts throughout Georgia. We are in District 3, so we won for our district," said Principal Ronie Collins.

The top schools are measured by reading and math assessments, meeting Annual Yearly Progress, or AYP, and meet or exceed state scores in science and social studies.

Vineeth Harish is in 5th grade at Britt David Academy. He told News Leader Nine, "It means I feel proud that I'm actually in this school. It makes me really happy."

Collins added, "We make sure our students are very focused on student achievement and I have a fantastic faculty and staff and parents and stinkin' cute and smart students, so that combination has been a winner for us."

As if being one of the top schools in Georgia isn't enough, the kids at Britt David have another surprise coming their way. The superintendent of schools will be arriving in style by landing at the Civic Center in a helicopter.

"We are a school of excellence now and we're in the top 10 percent and our superintendent Mr. Barge is coming," Vineeth said.

Collins added, "We are all ready to celebrate when the superintendent brings it to us."

Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Superintendent Barge's helicopter will land and then he will drive over to Britt David. There he will be part of an assembly and present the school with their award -- a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas.

News Leader Nine will be there to bring you more on the celebration.
