COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The suspect charged in a brutal attack on Columbus woman will be examined at a local mental health hospital.

Authorities arrested 29-year-old Brian McGhee back in October and charged him with Aggravated Battery.

On Wednesday, his attorney, Bill Kirby, requested a psychological exam for McGhee and the judge granted the request.

Columbus Police say McGhee is the man behind the attack on a 24-year-old woman who was beaten with a hammer. After the attack, she was taken to the Medical Center with severe head injuries and detectives say she lost her left eye.

When WTVM responded to the scene of the attack, there was blood on the front door of the victim's home and bloody sheets left on the front porch.

Reports from October indicate officers were called to the intersection of Lawyers Lane and 9th Street and found the woman with multiple severe head wounds in a street near her home.

A judge has granted McGhee a psychological exam which will be conducted at the West Central Georgia Regional Hospital in Columbus. His mother testified in court Wednesday about her son's "erratic behavior" and told the judge her son has already received a psychological exam at West Central.

Kirby would not say what McGhee's relationship is to the victim.

McGhee remains in the Muscogee County Jail.
