ATTALLA, Ala. (AP) - Officials in Attalla say a preliminary autopsy shows a 4-week-old girl died of smoke inhalation in an early-morning house fire.
The fire broke out eary Wednesday at a house across the street from an Attalla Fire Department station, and firefighters arrived in less than a minute and quickly extinguished the blaze.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Ray Cumby says the cause remains undetermined, but it could have started in a heater or electric blanket in the bedroom where the baby was asleep.
Assistant Fire Chief Chris Correll says the infant, Janaiha Pearl, and her 15-year-old mother, Terrica Pearl, were spending the night with the homeowner's 15-year-old granddaughter.
