IRS to hold free tax assistance open house Saturday

From the IRS

ATLANTA - Taxpayers who may have difficulty scheduling a visit to an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Taxpayer Assistance Center during normal weekday business hours can visit the IRS office at four different locations in Georgia on Saturday, February 26, and Saturday, March 26, 2011, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The IRS will host two Saturday Open Houses during the income tax filing season to provide free assistance to taxpayers who need help getting information required to file their tax returns.

Help with account questions, such as collection or examination issues, is also available during Open House.  In some instances virtual assistance will be offered, taxpayers will be assisted over the telephone by IRS employees who are working in other offices around the country.

"There are many tax credits and deductions that may help individuals struggling in tough economic times to save money on their taxes this year. For example, this year many people will qualify for EITC for the first time because their incomes have declined," said IRS spokesman Mark S. Green.  "We know some people are facing challenging economic times and we want to provide extra assistance on these Saturdays," Green said. "Our goal is to help them get what they need from the IRS."

In addition to the normal array of services, limited help preparing tax forms is available on a first-come, first-served basis in most locations.

Locations for the Open Houses are:

Atlanta (Summit) 401 W. Peachtree St.
Atlanta, GA 30308

Atlanta (Smyrna) 1899 Powers Ferry Rd.
  Atlanta, GA 30339

Atlanta (Koger) 2888 Woodcock Blvd.
Atlanta, GA 30341

  Columbus 3604 Macon Rd.
  Columbus, GA 31907

In addition to IRS help, community organizations partner with the IRS. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs assist people who earned $49,000 or less, and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs assist individuals age 60 and over with their 2010 income tax return preparation and electronic filing.

Many of these sites have Saturday hours while others offer assistance at various times during the week.

Taxpayers can call 800-906-9887 to locate partner sites in their area.

Over 35,000 taxpayers attended similar Open House events last year.  A complete list of Open House locations is available on
