Georgia megachurch announces staff cuts

LITHONIA, Ga. (AP) - Officials with the Georgia megachurch New Birth Missionary Baptist say that employee salaries are being reduced by 10%.

The Lithonia church said in a statement Wednesday that the economy has also led it to lay off two full-time employees.

Church spokesman Art Franklin said it also adopted a "pilot program" adjusting the work week from five to four days.

Franklin said New Birth has been affected by the economic downturn, and that it has responded with fiscal prudence and common sense.
