WORTH COUNTY, GA (WALB) -  Two young men are dead after the driver of a blue Dodge Charger lost control, swerved off the road and hit a tree late Sunday night in Worth County.

Officials say the men were traveling north on Highway 112 near mile marker 22 just after 11 Sunday night when they lost control, went off the road and traveled about 80 yards in the grass before slamming into a large pecan tree.

The tree and the car burst into flames, killing the driver, 18-year-old Lonnie Cooke, from the Clay County area,  and his passenger, whose name has not been released.

The men arrived in Albany Friday on a bus from an Army base in Kentucky. They picked up a car belonging to Cooke's relative, stopped in Sylvester to visit family, and then headed toward Ft. Stewart.

GSP says the preliminary indication is the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
