Hazelnuts, mixed nuts recalled due to E.coli contamination

From the Georgia Department of Agriculture

ATLANTA - Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black alerts consumers to the recall of some hazelnuts and mixed nuts that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The recall includes bulk- and consumer-packaged in-shell, hazelnut and mixed nut products from DeFranco and Sons, Los Angeles. The products may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. coli).

E. coli symptoms can include abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which is often bloody. Most infected people will recover within a week; however, some people can develop complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and require hospitalization.

Those at high risk for complications include children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

The nuts were distributed nationwide and to Canada between Nov. 2 and Dec. 22, 2010. The recall includes:

  • Sunripe, one-pound package of Large Hazelnuts with a Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 000167
  • Sunripe, one-pound package of Mixed Nuts with a Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 000143
  • Sunripe, two-pound package of Mixed Nuts with Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 001003
  • Sunripe, 50-pound package of Imperial Mixed Nuts, no Sell By Date listed, no UPC code
  • Sunripe, 50-pound package of Supreme Mixed Nuts, no Sell By Date listed, no UPC code
  • "Season's Greetings" Gift Pack, four-pound package of Mixed Nuts with a Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 101024
  • Georgia Packing, 50-pound package of Hazelnuts, only the products distributed by DeFranco and Sons between 11/2/10 to 12/22/10

The 50-pound bags of in-shell hazelnuts or mixed nuts may have been repackaged or sold in bulk containers to consumers.

Consumers who purchased these products should not consume them. Those with questions may contact DeFranco and Sons at (800) 992-3992, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. EST.
