Hazelnuts, mixed nuts recalled due to E.coli contamination

From the Georgia Department of Agriculture

ATLANTA - Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black alerts consumers to the recall of some hazelnuts and mixed nuts that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The recall includes bulk- and consumer-packaged in-shell, hazelnut and mixed nut products from DeFranco and Sons, Los Angeles. The products may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. coli).

E. coli symptoms can include abdominal cramps and diarrhea, which is often bloody. Most infected people will recover within a week; however, some people can develop complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and require hospitalization.

Those at high risk for complications include children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.

The nuts were distributed nationwide and to Canada between Nov. 2 and Dec. 22, 2010. The recall includes:

  • Sunripe, one-pound package of Large Hazelnuts with a Sell By Date of 6/30/11 and UPC code 070533 000167
