Spring Breakers invade Columbus to build homes

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - College students are trading in their bathing suits this spring break for a hammer.

"I think it is much more gratifying than going off somewhere else for spring break," said Kevin Medeiros, student volunteer from Connecticut.

150 college students are in Columbus for the week to build houses for Habitat for Humanity.

"Everyone deserves a place to call home. Everyone deserves a place to feel warm," said Kelly Leather.  This year is Leather's seventh build for Habitat for Humanity.

"I have actually been looking forward to coming to Georgia since I was a sophomore. I wanted to save this trip for senior year because I knew it was a blitz build and the community really comes together."

Seven houses along Bragg Smith Street in the Eastview neighborhood are being built.

Local builders offer their hand and keep everything in check and up to code.  Tom Moore is one of them.  He has been building houses in the community for 23 years.

"I feel very strongly if you make a living out of this type business, you need to put something back to it," explained Moore.

Columbus State students are also lending a hand.
