Phenix City man charged with 2 counts of arson

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County sheriff's deputies say an Alabama man told authorities he was setting fire to a wooded area because he was either ignorant or looking for attention as a means to get him away from his father.

The Sun Herald reports 29-year-old Brandon Bess, of Phenix City, Ala., was charged Sunday with two counts of arson.

Deputies say the thick black smoke from the fires near Interstate 10 resulted in a four-car pileup that sent an infant to an area hospital with critical injuries. Bess appeared in County Court on Monday, where his bond was set at a total of $20,000.

Authorities say Bess remains jailed in Jackson County, with the investigation continuing.
