Atlanta gets approval for Cuba charter flights

ATLANTA (AP) - The world's busiest airport says it has received federal approval for charter flights to Cuba.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport said Tuesday it has been approved by federal regulators as one of several gateways to Cuba. The move allows charter flights for passengers with close relatives in Cuba and others involved in the medical, agricultural, education or religious activities.

Other airports that already have the authority include Los Angeles, New York and Miami.

Airport general manager Louis Miller said the move will allow tens of thousands of Cuban-Americans to easily reunite with their friends and families.

Delta Air Lines said it is already licensed to operate the charter flights to Cuba and expects to begin nonstop charter flights from Atlanta to Cuba later this year.
