COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The New American Bible, the English Language Catholic Bible, got an upgrade for the first time in 40 years.

The Catholic Bishops said the change is needed for better understanding of the scriptures.

Father Tom Weise from St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Phenix City, AL explained that every version of the Bible is a translation. "Words change, words mean different things. In the way language is changing today, I do not think a Bible would have the same meaning in 20 years."

The word "booty" will be changed to "plunder." In today's contemporary English this word gets some laughs in Sunday School for its reference to buttocks or sex. The Bishops believe "plunder" better reflects the true meaning, the "spoils of war."

The word "holocaust" will be changed to "burnt offering."

And, the most controversial change is in Isaiah 7.  In the sentence "virgin will be with child," the word "virgin" will be changed to "young woman with child."  Some traditionalists disagree with this change.

Father Weise said, "It does not change the fact that we believe that Mary was a virgin, which is miraculous, of course."

Catholic Bishops said the new translation will not affect teaching. They believe it will help understanding.
