PINE MOUNTAIN, GA (WTVM) - Pilots N Paws is an online network of pilots who donate their time and flying skills to transport animals throughout the country.

After almost a two hour flight from North Carolina, a medical alert dog was reunited with his family in Pine Mountain.  Mary Reeves, Jake's owner, told News Leader Nine the reunion was emotional.

"There are no words that can express how I feel.  Just knowing that he's home and that he can get cared for," said Reeves.

Jake had an entourage bursting to see him.  Reeves's granddaughter, Courtney, said she cannot wait to get her dog home.

"Just play ball with him like roll the ball and he'll go get it and bring it back," said Courtney.

The one year old lab has been gone since October learning how to sense when Reeves has low blood sugar.

"So that I can get help or he can bark and someone in the house will be able to come and check on me," said Reeves.

During his training, Jake escaped through fencing and was hit by a car breaking his pelvis in two places and causing nerve damage in his right leg.

That is when Jake's veterinaries  contacted Pilots N Paws, a nationwide online network that connects volunteer pilots like Joe Budd with animals like Jake who are far away and needing to get home.  Budd explained helping these animals as well as their families has a place in his heart.

"We've helped something that you know probably would have had to endure a ten hour drive," said Budd.

Jake flew over three states.  Budd described Jake as one of his best passengers ever.

"I've had dogs that bark and get nervous, but Jake was a quiet passenger today.  I think he just relaxed and enjoy the flight," said Budd.

But, the flight is not the end of the road for Jake.  Now, he will be on cage rest at his vet's clinic.  Reeves said she is hoping the rest will help heal all his injuries, but she and her family will be counting down the days until he comes home.
