House: Nursing homes can honor do not resuscitate

ATLANTA (AP) - The House has cleared a bill that would allow do not resuscitate orders to be honored in nursing homes.

State Rep. Mike Cheokas, an Americus Republican, said that currently patients who go into cardiac arrest in a nursing home must be resuscitated, even if they have signed an order saying they do not want such life-sustaining measures to be taken.

He said the bill would simply "respect the wishes of those in the final stages of life."

The legislation passed 160-1 on Monday.

It now heads to the state Senate.
