COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Columbus Police are working to avoid a traffic nightmare on the city's north side this weekend.

The Thunder in the Valley Air Show will start at the Columbus Airport on Saturday as well as the start of Little League games at Britt David Park.

The two events draw thousands and last year, traffic was backed up on Interstate 185 and Airport Thruway.

Columbus police are asking people to take different routes to avoid the congestion.

"The left hand turns on Airport Thruway are eliminated and blocked during the air show for a smoother traffic flow for those attending the Thunder in the Valley air show. Our recommendation is that if people are trying to get to the baseball park, they need to go westbound on Veterans Parkway to West Britt David Road, make a right hand turn and enter the park through that location," explained Lieutenant Mark D. Starling who oversees the Columbus Police Department's Motor Squad.

Police say drivers will also be able to come down Miller Road to Britt David Road and come straight across Airport Thruway on Armour Road.
