COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  The riders were announced for the annual "Scott's Ride for Miracles", an event where local motorcycle riders drive across the country and raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.

A cross country trip may sound like a nice vacation, but try doing it in 21 days, on a motorcycle, and you may re-think that. But 14 local riders are doing just that, to benefit the patients of the Children's Miracle Network.

Babies and motorcycles may not seem like two things that would go together, but 14 men using their bikes to raise money to literally save these young lives.

"You can talk about it, you can try to explain it to them, but until you go up and get on the high risk floor, and you see that baby that can literally fit in your hand, then you know you're doing it for a really good cause," Scott Ressmeyer explained.

It started out as a one time deal: to celebrate his 50th birthday Scott Ressmeyer would ride across the country to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. Now it's two years, thirteen people and thousands of dollars later.

Ressmeyer said, "This year I had even more people say "we need to go back" or "we want to go". So it can't keep going forever, I want it to have a definite end, and I think $1 million is an obtainable goal and that's what we want to reach for."

Before putting rubber to the road, the riders visited the portions of the hospital that will benefit from the ride. They also had the chance to meet the patients their money will help.

Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley is riding with the group for the second time this year. He said, "Visiting hospitals gave me an opportunity to see there are children everywhere that need help and the fact that 11 guys I rode with gave me a group of new friends."

And now six brand new motorcycle riders will join the fleet, raising money for needy children and building life-long memories. Ressmeyer added, "It will be fun sharing it with them. Just the stories we'll have, it's a lifetime experience."

The Miracle Riders, as they are calling themselves, will visit patients at several Children's Miracle Network hospitals all over the country. Their journey kicks off May 6th.
