Russell County school board votes to close elementary school

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) –   The Russell County School Board voted Tuesday to shut down Russell Elementary School.

They say it is just "too costly" to keep the 70-year old building open.

There are 107 students and 12 teachers attending the school.

Prior to Tuesday's decision, the board gave the public an opportunity to voice their concerns, however in the end there was nothing left to do but shut it down.

"Most of the comments were things like it's a historical site, it's been there so long and those are good reasons for a school but they are not the reasons why you should keep a school open," said Superintendent William Green "We had to look at the classroom size, equity, we had to look at the programs that we offer for those children down there and can those children be better served at other facilities that are a little more updated."

Superintendent Green says most of the students will be transferred to Oliver Elementary School.

They also plan to move their teachers to other schools in the district to try and avoid layoffs.
