PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) – A Phenix City council member charged with forgery and perjury pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday.

The charges against Arthur Sumbry Sr. stem from a business situation in 2008 when he was acting as a notary public.

He is accused of forging a signature on a legal document he notarized and later lied about it in court under oath.

Officials in the Russell County district attorney's office say Sumbry will most likely go to trial in June.
