Auburn spring features battle to replace Newton

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn Tigers opened spring practice with an ailing head coach, a quarterback battle and plenty of other jobs up for grabs.

Junior Barrett Trotter and sophomore Clint Moseley started their competition Wednesday to replace Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton for the defending national champions.

An ailing Gene Chizik pulled his pickup truck up to the field after the players stretched and warmed up. He didn't speak to reporters.

Trotter and Moseley are the Tigers' only scholarship quarterbacks until signee Kiehl Frazier arrives.

Auburn lost two dozen seniors while underclassmen Newton, Nick Fairley and Darvin Adams entered the NFL draft.

Plus, Chizik kicked five players off the team for offseason arrests - including starting safety Mike McNeil.
