FORT MITCHELL, AL (WTVM) - The Russell County Sheriff's Office is setting up shop in Fort Mitchell. Sheriff Heath Taylor asked county commissioners to allow him to start the process of opening a precinct there.
Because of the recent housing boom, along with upcoming population growth, Taylor says Fort Mitchell crime rates are rising and more deputies are needed, "There's vandalism, there's robberies and burglaries in that area due to the increase in population. What we're trying to do, similar to what we do in Hurtsboro, is we're trying to have a presence in that community."
The precinct will be set up in an existing building in Fort Mitchell. Deputies will man the post during peak hours.
The Fort Mitchell precinct is slated to open in late April.
