ABI makes arrest in 1999 homicide

From the Alabama Department of Public Safety

MONTGOMERY - The Alabama Department of Public Safety in cooperation with the Texas Department of Public Safety  on Tuesday, March 22, made an arrest in an unsolved homicide from 1999 in Macon County.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation, one of Public Safety's six divisions,   obtained warrants for murder and robbery in the first degree in reference to the murder 12 years ago of Petaluma, Calif., truck driver Robert Nelson, whose body was found July 2, 1999, off Interstate 85 North in Macon County.

On Tuesday, the ABI in coordination with the Texas Department of Public Safety took into custody Gary Lee Poisel Jr., 39, of Amarillo, Texas.  He was placed in Randall County Detention Facility in Amarillo and is awaiting extradition.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, Macon County Sheriff's Office and the 5th Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office played an important role in Poisel's arrest, and the ABI extends its gratitude.

No additional information is available at this time.
