Auburn's Pelton inherits Fairley big task

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn's new defensive line coach is charged with replacing two Lombardi Award winners.

Mike Pelton returned to his alma mater early this month to take over a line that lost three starters, including surefire NFL first-round pick Nick Fairley. He took over when another Lombardi winner, Tracy Rocker, left to coach with the Tennessee Titans.

Fairley and two other starters are gone, leaving sophomore end Nosa Eguae as the most established player. Tigers coach Gene Chizik says it's "an experience problem" not a talent issue.

He says sophomore tackles Jeff Whitaker and Kenneth Carter must produce. Freshmen could step into backup roles when they report for fall camp.

It's a big challenge for Pelton, who was a first-team All-SEC tackle for the Tigers in 1994.
