COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - What started out as a routine ride home for some Hannan Elementary students turned into a school bus ride many of them will never forget.

"A school bus caught fire just after its departure from the school. We are great full to say that all the students were moved from the bus safely," Valerie Fuller Media Relations Director with Muscogee County School District said.

According to The Muscogee County School District a student notified the bus driver about smoke coming from the front engine. Within minutes the entire bus was filled with smoke.

The bus driver immediately started to evacuate the students when a fire broke out.

"The bus driver took all the correct protocol they used the front and rear entrances and exits and everybody got off safely," Lieutenant Lance Smith said.

Columbus fire and EMS were called out to the scene just before 3 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire. But school officials are giving a lot of the credit to the students.

"I have to report that the bus driver reported to me, he said the students were so well behaved, they did exactly what we've asked them to do and that's very important in a time like this especially when there is a fire involved," Valerie Fuller said.

As a result an investigation into what caused the fire is now underway.

"That bus will be picked up by a tow service it will be towed back to the transportation to find out exactly what was wrong," Fuller said.
