Getting your kids ready for the CRCT

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - While some in the Valley are gearing up for spring break, it is crunch time for schools all across Georgia.  The Criterion-Referenced Competency Test, or the CRCT, is the yearly Georgia standardized testing for Elementary and Middle school students.

The state of Georgia uses the CRCT to gauge students' learning, but does the pressure of the test stress your kids out?  News Leader Nine has some tips to help.

In two weeks, the Super Bowl of Elementary and Middle School is coming to the Valley.  The testing is the time for students to show what they have learned throughout the year in math, reading, science, social studies and English language arts.  Now, before testing, teachers, like Charlene Coleman at Clubview Elementary, are encouraging parents to keep their kids calm.

"Relax.  We're having a regular day.  We're been working hard all year long.  Do not worry about April," said Coleman.

Coleman has been teaching for about 15 years.  She told News Leader Nine even though it is crunch time, the schools have been working all year to make sure your kids are ready.

"You practice and you try not to cram.  You just slowly implement the strategies all year long so it won't be such a headache at the end of the year," said Coleman.

Students, like Shyla Khan, agree.  Khan says Mrs. Coleman's class has made studying easier for her.

"She helps us study in a fun way not you know being strict," said Khan.

Coleman said practicing over the next week of spring break will help keep your kids fresh and ready for the test.  Also, Coleman has some tips for the day of the test..

"Go to bed on time, eat a good breakfast, make sure that morning, you ease them up in time so you're not in a panic trying to get to school," said Coleman.

Most importantly, Coleman said to encourage your kids and let them know that they are going to be great. Testing will be spread out over two weeks at Clubview Elementary.

Normally in Georgia, students in 1st grade through 8th grade have to take the test, but due to budget cuts, this year only 3rd through 8th will be tested.
