Fatal shooting at Southern Union State Community College in Opelika

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM/WSFA) - Opelika police are confirming that one person has died in a shooting on the campus of Southern Union State Community College in Opelika. Two others are wounded and a fourth person was injured by flying glass.

A late model mini-van with shattered windows is sitting in the parking lot at SUSCC, the scene of the crime. All victims are said to be females, and a domestic violence situation is suspected.

The shooter is not in custody at this time, though authorities say they do have a suspect. They would not release details on that suspect, however.

A 63-year-old was killed in the shooting. One victim, 94, was airlifted to Columbus Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the neck and back. Another victim, 36, was transported to East Alabama Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the arm.  wasn't immediately known which age belong to which victim.

The fourth victim, a 4-year-old child, was also taken to EAMC with injuries sustained by flying glass.

The shooting took place outside the Higginbotham Academic Center while students were changing classes, according to an SUSCC spokeswoman. Evening classes have been canceled.
