More than 1,000 students rally for Ala. colleges

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - More than a thousand students from colleges across Alabama rallied in front of the Alabama Statehouse seeking additional funding for Alabama colleges and universities.

The students held a football-style rally complete with cheerleaders, bands from Alabama State and the University of West Alabama and cheers that could be heard by lawmakers in the halls of the Statehouse.

The rally was part of the annual Higher Education Day activities at the Legislature.

Higher Education Partnership executive director Gordon Stone asked students to encourage lawmakers to pass an education budget that gives at least 33% of available education funds to higher education.

Some students said they came to the rally because they are concerned about the cost of tuition. Several state officials including Gov. Robert Bentley spoke at the rally.
