Suspected murder weapon recovered

By Lindsey Connell – email

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Divers have located a suspected murder weapon in the Chattahoochee River under the Dillingham Street Bridge.

Members of the Russell County Sheriff's Office Underwater Criminal Investigative Dive Team searched the waters for most of the day Tuesday, looking for a handgun believed to be involved in the 2010 murder of 19-year-old Daquaran Character in Columbus on Halloween.

The suspect, Fabian Henderson, told police he took the gun apart and threw the parts in different locations in the river.

Divers recovered one part of the gun exactly where Henderson said it would be. Officials have not said why Henderson is suddenly speaking to authorities about the location of the gun this long after his arrest.

They also found an assault rifle and sawed off shotgun in the water.

The weapons will be sent off to the Georgia state crime lab for testing to try to determine if they are connected to other crimes.
