WEST POINT, GA (AP) - Kia Motors is bringing in more than 2,800 tons of equipment to expand its Georgia plant.

Heavy machinery and other equipment bound for the automaker's manufacturing plant in West Point is scheduled to arrive Wednesday at the Port of Savannah.

Port officials say the shipment is being delivered in 219 crates, with the heaviest piece of equipment weighing 340,000 pounds.

The machinery will be assembled into a 5,400-ton transfer press that stamps steel into vehicle body panels such as hoods, doors and fenders.

First it will have to be driven nearly 300 miles by a fleet of trucks from the docks in Savannah to the Kia plant, which opened in west Georgia last year.
