FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - According to the National Weather Service and Fort Benning officials, an F1 tornado touched down in the Harmony Church area just before 5 am Saturday morning.
A soldier saw the twister coming. "I heard the loud wind outside my window. I looked out and saw it heading my way, it scared me," said Pablo Vierilass. When the soldiers walked outside, they saw much more destruction than they could imagine. Their first thought was their cars were missing. After a closer look 200 yards into the next parking lot, there they were mangled and crushed.
"It just ripped apart my pick-up truck", explained STG Dave Wilson. Some vehicles were unrecognizable. A portion of the roof and siding were also torn off the brand new barracks at Harmony Church.
There were no reported injuries and all personnel were accounted. We are getting it cleaned up pretty quickly, soon things will look normal again," said Monica Manganaro, Public Information Spokesman.
The building that was most heavily damaged was unoccupied.
Fort Benning officials say the storm damage in Harmony Church area will not affect the Armor School's transition from Fort Knox. Although they do not have a dollar amount for the damage they say the repairs will be completed quickly well before the soldiers arrive by September.
