FEMA rejects Alabama's request for storm help

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama emergency management officials say the Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied federal assistance to Sumter and Marengo counties after storms struck April 15-16.

State officials said FEMA determined that the severity and magnitude of damage to buildings was not beyond the capability of the state and local governments and volunteer agencies to handle.

Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Art Faulkner.said state officials are disappointed in the decision.

The governor has 30 days if he decides to appeal to the decision.
