Shooting victim paralyzed, gunmen arrested

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus Police have arrested two men they say are responsible for a shooting that has left a man paralyzed.

Last Saturday, investigators say 34-year-old Franklin Makell, the victim, went into the Super C gas station last Friday to buy something. Roberto Duff, a man police say Makell has an ongoing argument with over drugs, saw Makell pull into the gas station and went in after him. The two exchanged words inside the convenience store and Makell went out to his car to leave.

Police say Duff jumped him from behind in the parking lot and a man that was with Duff, Jeremy Riley, shot at Makell from the sidewalk, hitting him in the chest.

Makell is now in a hospital in Atlanta and detectives say it appears he is paralyzed from the waist down.

Roberto Duff was arrested the 24th and charged with Aggravated Assault. He says he just wanted to fight Makell and didn't know Riley was going to shoot him but police say the surveillance video shows the duo was waiting to ambush the victim and the attack was set up.

Jeremy Riley was arrested Friday and charged with Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. He is scheduled to be in court Monday at 8 AM.
