Auburn, AL teen wins poetry reciting contest

AUBURN, AL (AP) - A 16-year-old student from Auburn has won a national poetry reciting contest and a $20,000 award.

The student, Youssef Biaz, was the winner in the Poetry Out Loud national finals on Friday at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C.

Biaz was among nine finalists and 53 state champions from around the country who participated in the sixth national poetry recitation contest, sponsored by the National Arts Endowment and the Poetry Foundation.

His school, Auburn High School, will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books.

Biaz's final recitation for the evening was "Filling Station" by Elizabeth Bishop, a traveler's view of a gas station.
