Teen pleads guilty to murder in Columbus, GA

COLUMBUS, GA (AP) - An 18-year-old pleaded guilty to murder in the shooting death of a 19-year-old in Columbus and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Superior Court Chief Judge John Allen sentenced Jeffrey Jones on Tuesday after Jones entered his plea. Jones could have faced life in prison with no chance of parole had he been convicted in the death of Mercer Gadsden. He apologized to the victim's family after entering his plea.

Prosecutors say Jones and 16-year-old Jashard M. Maddox went to a house on Oct. 1 to buy marijuana from Gadsden. They say Jones wound up chasing Gadsden and shooting him.

Maddox pleaded guilty in March to tampering with evidence. He was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by three on probation.
