COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Work on the Chattahoochee River has begun with the 'Ready 2 Raft' white water project set to be finished by late 2013 or early 2014.

For those people who are not able or do not want to raft, there is now a bridge in the works to make it easy and safe to watch all the action.

The bridge will start just off the River Walk near the Eagle and Phenix Mill Lofts and will take you across the river to the rock island.  The island is near the intersection of 12th Street and Bay Ave.

"We will prepare the island so it will be in a state to where people can actually go out on the island, have a seat, and view the kayakers when they come down the river," explained Uptown Columbus's Richard Bishop.

Bishop said there will be minor work done to prepare the island.

The bridge is being paid for by a grant from the Georgia DOT.

For three weeks, contractors have been working on the Alabama side of the river.  Bishop says they are adding elements to the channel that will create the white water.
