COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in the Oakland Park section of South Columbus.

Around 10:30 Monday night, officers were called to a house on Ladd Street in reference to a domestic dispute.

According to Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren, 46-year-old Lawrence Apt and his mother were arguing over a dog. Apt wanted to bring the animal into his mother's house but her landlord does not allow pets inside the home and she had been previously fined for having the dog in the rental property.

Apt does not live in the house with his mom but he stays in a makeshift tool shed behind the home and went there after the argument. His mother called police because she wanted him to leave and when the first squad car got there, she told the officers her son had a gun.

A second patrol car arrived as back up and officers went to knock on the door of the shed.

When Apt answered the door, Chief Boren says he was holding something behind his back. The officers asked him to drop whatever it was and when he brought his hands out from behind him, it appeared he was holding a handgun and pointed in the direction of the uniformed officers. One of the officers fired twice at Apt, a bullet hitting him in the wrist.

Boren says the weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.

Apt was taken to the Medical Center and Boren said he was undergoing surgery Tuesday. According to the chief, he'll be charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer when he is released from the hospital.

The officer who shot him as been put on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the shooting.

Boren has asked an outside agency, the GBI, to handle the investigation which he says is standard procedure when it comes to officer-involved shootings.
