Russell County Jail gets $2.9 million improvements

PHENIX CITY, AL (WXTX) -  A multi-million dollar project is making its way to Russell County after commissioners approved an expansion to the jail.

After a year and a half of going through red tape, the Russell County Jail is finally getting some much needed improvements.

"This project is so much needed and it was a joint effort between the cooperation of the city council as well as the unanimous vote today by the county commission," explained Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor.

The $2.9 million investment will create space for an additional 120 inmates as well as a few other upgrades. Taylor said, "A total revamping of the kitchen that is in the current facility to a modern kitchen that would serve the community and the inmates there."

And since new correction officers haven't been hired since 1993, the jail will also be hiring on new staff.

Russell County Jail Administrator Loette Holland-Leonard added, "It's going to change my day to day operation a lot because I have more people to be accountable for, we have more tasks at hand to be completed and we have to work at that as a team. We're a team with the same purpose."

Groundbreaking should take place in the next 30 to 45 days and you can expect to see the new facility in up to 14 months.
