Couple accused of torture, granted $400,000 bond each

PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - A man and a woman are facing multiple charges of child torture.

Stephanie Hughes and Patrick McNair were both granted bond by a Russell County Judge Friday morning. They face $50,000 per count -- making their bond $200,000 each.

We are told Hughes, 26, and McNair, 33, were both charged four counts each with allegedly mistreating children under the age of 10.

The duo was arrested at a home located at Pine Ridge Trail in Phenix City.

Hughes and McNair are expected to appear in court Friday. We are told Hughes is the mother of the four children involved, but McNair is not their father.

The allegations are that the victims' hands were burned in a fire and they were hit with an object, possibly a 2X4, leaving them with multiple bruises.

Police say the abuse was a "recent incident" and happened at the family's Phenix City home.

The Phenix City Police Department says that willful abuse and maltreatment of anyone under the age of 18 is considered a felony.
