Man arrested after shootout with police

Officers responded to 610 Glenn Robertson Street in reference to a Burglary in progress.  When officers arrived, the owner advised that the suspect ran from the home towards the wooded area between Brown and Borton Street.

Officers surrounded the area and observed the suspect hiding in the woods near the 500 Block of Smoot Street.  As the suspect was exiting the woods he fired shots at a police officer who returned fire. 

The suspect was taken into custody a few minutes after the shots were fired by one of the department's K-9s. 

The suspect was identified as Taurean Cofield and was found to have active warrants for parole violation. 

Cofield was treated for the K-9 bite and later transported to the Troup County Jail and charged with burglary, aggravated assault on a police officer, felony obstruction of an officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. 

No one was struck during the exchange of gunfire.
