BARBOUR COUNTY, AL (WXTX) -  The Barbour County Sheriff says his deputies stopped a marijuana growing operation before it could get started.

Deputies were doing a road block on Highway 10 in the southern part of Barbour County Tuesday and stopped a Chevy Trailblazer hatchback with three men inside.

According to Sheriff Leroy Upshaw, officers found at least two pounds of marijuana seeds hidden in secret compartments near the engine and in the hatchback door.

Officers also found a handgun hidden under the dash board as well as camping gear and fertilizer.

Sheriff Upshaw says he thinks the men were going to plant the marijuana seeds in the area and grow the drug, living at the site to watch over the illegal crop.

The men were arrested and the truck was seized. On Wednesday, deputies were taking the gas tank and other parts of the vehicle apart to see if they could find any other hidden seeds.

Sheriff Upshaw has contacted the District Attorney's Office regarding possible charges and federal authorities to see if the are interested in the case.

If harvested and grown, he says the seeds would be worth around $250,000.
