STEWART COUNTY, GA (WALB) - A high speed chase ended in a crash through the gates of Fort Benning. Police say speeds reached more than 140 miles per hour.

Saturday night, Police responded to shots fired in downtown Richland during the Mayfest Celebration. The suspect, 24-year-old Joshua Humpheries, sped out on Milken Avenue toward Highway 520 and Columbus. The chase was on from there.

Police say his 2007 red Dodge Charger reached speeds of more than 140 miles per hour before he crashed into the gates at Fort Benning and hit two military police cars.

During the chase, police say he also crashed into a deputy's cruiser.

Arresting officers say Humpheries had a hand gun in his car.

He's currently being held in the Chattahoochee County Jail on numerous charges including reckless driving. He could also face federal charges.
