OPELIKA, AL (WXTX) – A grocery store employee is going to be fine after he tried to stop a shoplifter from taking four cases of beer and two bags of charcoal.

Police say the suspect 33-year old Jose Garcia of Valley shoplifted the beer and charcoal from the Tiger Town Kroger.

A Kroger employee tried to stop Garcia from leaving the parking lot with the stolen merchandise, and that's when police say Garcia backed into the employee with his car.

"When he was leaving the store in an effort to get away from the employee he backed into the employee with his Chevrolet Suburban; knocking him into some shopping carts," says Captain Allan Elkins of Opelika Police Department.

Kroger employees called 911, and Opelika police caught up with the suspect on Interstate-85. After a high speed chase, spike strips were used to disable Garcia's vehicle, and he was taken into custody near Exit 78.

He faces one count of armed robbery.
