Alabama Legislature passes education budget

MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) - The Alabama Senate has given final approval to a $5.6 billion education budget after meeting all night.

The budget cleared the Senate 19-6 Wednesday morning. It was approved by the House on Tuesday and now goes to the governor for review.

State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton says the budget is about the best it can be considering the state's financial condition. The budget is based on cutting 1,125 teaching jobs, but it provides more money to operate buses.

The new budget will spend $241 million more than this year's budget. That replaces less than half of the stimulus funds that schools are spending this year, but won't have next year.

The Senate approved a General Fund budget shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday. The House will consider it later Wednesday.
