Atmos Energy repairs gas leak, no safety concerns at Green Island

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Atmos Energy servicemen have repaired a ruptured gas line struck by an SUV.

The driver of a white Toyota Sequoia hit a pipe located above ground when he swerved off Standing Boy Road. The 21-year-old man was trying to avoid hitting three deer, according to police.

It happened in Green island Hills near the Marina Cove just before 4:00 a.m. Thursday.

Atmos Energy crews fixed the problem by squeezing off a piece of the plastic service line to stop the flow of gas, said Public Relations Manager, Joel Ames.

Natural gas dissipates into the air causing a strong odor. Ames added an odorant is placed inside the pipes to easily detect gas leaks.

The accident caused extensive damage to the vehicle. The driver and passenger were not injured but managed to miss the deer.
