FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Soldiers at Fort Benning traded their combat boots for cowboy boots as they welcomed country music acts to the big stage this Memorial Day weekend.
Bridgett Siter, who is the publicity representative for MWR explained, "It's the Army Concert Tour. MWR brings big name entertainment from one installation to the next, traveling around. This year it's quite a coo to get Toby Keith. We like to think he's been wanting to come here for a long time because we have been wanting him to come here for a long time."
Special guests Mockingbird Sun and Gloriana also took the stage to sing for hundreds of soldiers and their families.
"It's awesome, it means a lot to have something unique to do after basic training. We graduate on Friday so it's neat," said Fort Benning soldier Kenneth Creasy.
Concert-goers say this couldn't have come at a better time.
"What a great time! The Army Concert tour isn't always on Memorial Day. It's just the perfect time to say thank you to the soldiers and who better than Toby Keith to say thank you to the soldiers," said Siter.
Ft. Benning soldier Jaron Clower agreed, "It's insane especially because we're soldiers now, but all these people are all here for us so it's exciting. It shows we have a lot of support."
Siter added, "What a great opportunity for not just him to say thank you but for the Chattahoochee Valley to come out and spend an evening with the soldiers and seeing him. It's all about saying thank you Toby Keith and the soldiers."
