Mayor Tomlinson invited to Germany, potentially bringing 500 jobs

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson has been selected from a group of mayors to attend a trip to bring new industry to Columbus.

Mayor Tomlinson told the media Wednesday, "The truth is, I told my staff to decline the invitation at first because I could not imagine there was not a ‘catch' to it and because we are so busy with the budget and other important issues. I have to commend my executive assistant Judy Tucker with investigating to learn that this was an extraordinary economic development opportunity".

While in Germany, Tomlinson will have the chance to meet with two economic development candidates. One of the candidates has placed Columbus, GA on its project short-list - potentially involving a $67 million capital investment and 500 extra jobs in our area.

"This is what the economic trip is all about, getting new jobs and capital investment", affirmed Mike Gaymon, President of the Columbus Chamber.

The invitation was extended by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany after he and Tomlinson met at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus.

Mayor Tomlinson will attend a Sustainable Planning, Sustainable Cities tour of German cities at the invitation of the German government. We are told the German government will pay for Tomlinson's trip.

The tour is slated for June 5-11.

Mayor Tomlinson is among a select group of mayors  attending this tour.

Other mayors attending include:

Otis Johnson of Savannah, GA
Knox White of Greenville, SC
Bryan Barnett of Rochester Hills, MI
Mark Mallory of Cincinnati, OH
