Opelika middle school student completes first two rounds at Scripps

WASHINGTON (WTVM)  – A 7th grader from Opelika, AL represented Alabama this week at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington.

Kevin Lazenby, 12, successfully completed the first two oral rounds of the competition, but did not score enough on the written test to advance to Thursday's semifinals.

Lazenby correctly spelled dolorifuge and tectonosphere on Wednesday.

After tabulating the scores for the written and oral rounds, the 275 middle school spellers representing the nation was cut to 50 Wednesday evening.
