Possible drowning in Chattahoochee River

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) – Investigators in Columbus continue to try to figure out how a man ended up dead in Chattahooche River.

Emily Brookins and her mother could not believe the man they both knew and loved was gone.

Forty-three year old Steven Brookins was pronounced dead just after 6 pm Saturday evening. Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower said Brookins was found in 10 feet of water off an island near Bibb City.

Steven's brother Ronny Brookins fought back tears and mixed emotions this afternoon.

"My brother was a good man he was a hard worker 43 years old, he tried the best all his life to raise his kids the best he could," Brookins said.

"He was the type of person that would give you anything he could, he would give you the shirt of his back to try and help anybody that he could," Brookins said.

According to family members Brookins was spending the weekend camping on the island with friends as he often does. He was reported missing Saturday around 10 am.

Emily says her dad was an avid swimmer who loved the river.

The exact cause of Brookins death has not been confirmed. Thrower said the body will be sent to Atlanta for autopsy on Monday.
