Man escapes fire, tells landlord, “They got me!”

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A Columbus man suffered burns to his hand as he frantically escaped from a home fully engulfed in flames.

The victim got out of the home safely and ran next door to alert the homeowner.    "I looked outside and saw the flames shooting out the windows and he said, they got me man, they got me," said Raphael Fuentez, landlord and owner.

When asked if the victim was implying the fire was deliberately set, Fuentez replied, "Yeah, he thought they did it intentionally." The victim was transported to St. Francis hospital for treatment by a family member.  Hospital officials have not released his condition.

The duplex located at 1509-B 23rd Street caught on fire around 4:00 Wednesday morning. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the right side of the structure was fully involved.  The other apartment sustained smoke damage.

Once firefighters got the blaze under control, fire investigators sifted through the rubble searching for clues as to what caused the fire.

Authorities are not sure where the fire started inside the home. Firefighters say it's a total loss.  Fuentez said he had insurance but is uncertain whether he will rebuild.
