Body of burned woman found in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Ala. (AP) - Police in Fairfield are investigating after firefighters discovered the burned body of a woman behind a vacant home. reports that evidence at the scene indicates that the woman was killed elsewhere, and her body was discarded at the vacant home.

Fairfield Fire Chief Leon Davis said the body was found about 11:30 a.m. Saturday on 40th Street. He said the firefighters and police found the body when they responded to a blaze behind the home.

The woman is described only as a white female. Davis said she was burned badly and they have not yet been able to identify her or the cause of death.

Few other details were available Sunday.


Signs to guide visitors to Shoals' music heritage

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (AP) - Signs will soon point visitors to The Shoals region toward the musical landmarks that made the area famous.

Judy Sizemore, director of Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area, said there are plans to place at least 10 signs in Muscle Shoals and others throughout the area.

The TimesDaily reports that the sites focus on the region's music recording history, including the story of the FAME and the Muscle Shoals Sound recording studios.

The signs are part of a larger project, The Roots of American Music Trail, and will feature the trail logo and a directional arrow.

Josh Everett, of Johnson and Associates Engineering, said the trail is being patterned somewhat like the Mississippi Blues Trail that has more than 150 markers across Mississippi and 11 markers scattered outside the state.


Alabama trooper, 2 suspects wounded in gun battle

HARTFORD, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama State Trooper is hospitalized in stable condition after he was wounded in a gun battle that also left two suspects injured on a southeast Alabama road.

Authorities say the gunfire began as a traffic stop, but quickly turned into a shootout between the trooper and the suspects around 5:30 p.m. Saturday on County Road 57 in Geneva County.

Authorities say Trooper Lee Phillips was pulling over a Toyota for a traffic violation when the vehicle came to an abrupt stop, two men got out and opened fire on the trooper, who returned fire.

A State Patrol spokesman said Phillips was listed in stable condition at Flowers Hospital Saturday night.

The Dothan Eagle reports that both suspects were wounded and taken to hospitals. Their conditions weren't immediately known.


Arkansas' Grable wins 2 titles at NCAA gymnastics

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Arkansas' Katherine Gable won two national titles and Florida's Bridget Sloan captured the third of her career at the NCAA women's gymnastics championships.

Grable won the floor exercise with a 9.9625 and tied with LSU's Rheagan Courville for first on the vault in Sunday's individual competition.

It's the second straight year Courville has shared the vault title. Both scored 9.975s.

A 2008 Olympian, Sloan won the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.9375. She won the all-around and balance beam titles last year and had helped the Gators win a share of their second straight championship on Saturday night.

Co-champion Oklahoma tied the Gators again with one title. Taylor Spears won the balance beam at 9.925.
