Lions top Carolina Speed in regular season wrapup

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Columbus Lions used a strong second half to hand the Carolina Speed a 55-40 defeat on Saturday night at the Columbus Civic Center.

The Lions (11-1) got off to a slow start and held a slim 14-12 lead in the final two minutes of the first half when they got a boost from a familiar source. SIFL interceptions leader Damien Daniel picked off a Bill Ashburn pass, and the Lions turned around and scored with :02 remaining on a 5-yard Chris McCoy-to-Gerald Gales TD toss to make it 21-12 at the break.

The Lions outscored the Speed (3-9) 16-6 in the third quarter and never looked back.

Next week, the Lions open the SIFL playoffs when they host the Trenton Steel (8-4) in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
